Japanese NGO supports the UNODC by fundraising towards other NGOs’ drug prevention activities and drug demand reduction strategies

On 15 March, Mr. Akira Fujino, President of the Drug Abuse Prevention Center (DAPC), in the presence of Mr. Takeshi Hikihara, Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, handed over 11 million yen (approximately 84 thousand USD) to Ms. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the UNODC, which was collected through DAPC’s fundraising campaign in Japan this fiscal year.
 
Ms. Waly expressed her appreciation for DAPC’s continuous support for the past 30 years and welcomed the leadership role of youth, both in fundraising activities in Japan as well as in drug prevention activities in the recipient NGOs. Mr. Fujino stressed the importance of cooperation in drug prevention activities at the regional level.

DAPC’s donations have been used, through UNODC, to support the drug abuse prevention activities of engaged NGOs from low and middle-income countries. To date, DAPC have contributed approximately 741.5 million yen supporting 780 projects through UNODC. This year marks the 30th anniversary since this valuable contribution began in 1993. A high-level side event to commemorate the 30th anniversary of this collaboration was held on 14 March, on the margins of the 66th session of CND.
